What we will see and do
Toledo
Formerly the capital of the Kingdom of Spain during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, Toledo is known as the “City of Three Cultures” for its Christian, Jewish, and Muslim heritage. Its historic center , declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986, preserves an astonishing concentration of medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque monuments, all within a city that still retains the layout of its walls and narrow streets.
Toledo Cathedral
, the Primate Cathedral of Spain, is one of the most monumental works of European Gothic architecture. Built between 1226 and 1493 on the site of a former mosque, it is notable for its richly carved and polychrome altarpiece , its magnificent 15th-century stained-glass windows , the choir with Flemish stalls , and its impressive Baroque transept , a unique sculptural intervention that bathes the high altar in light.
The Alcázar of Toledo
, dominating the city from its hilltop perch, is a Roman-era military fortress that has been rebuilt several times. During the Spanish Civil War, it became a symbol of resistance. Today, it houses the Army Museum , with a collection that traces Spain’s military history from the Middle Ages. Its terrace offers spectacular panoramic views of the Tagus River and the entire city .
Church of Santo Tomé
This church, of Mudéjar origin, houses one of the most celebrated works of Spanish painting: “The Burial of the Count of Orgaz” , painted by El Greco in 1586. The work is famous for its drama, its spirituality and for masterfully portraying both celestial figures and nobles of the time.
Old Town and San Martín Bridge:
A stroll through the medieval streets reveals unique corners and allows you to experience the essence of a city frozen in time. The San Martín Bridge , of medieval origin, spans the Tagus River with its five pointed arches and offers one of Toledo’s most iconic views, especially at sunset.
Aranjuez
Located on the banks of the Tagus River, Aranjuez is one of Spain’s most important historic royal residences. Its cultural landscape was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. It served as a retreat and leisure destination for the monarchy, particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries. Its urban planning, based on Enlightenment principles, combines monumental architecture, Baroque gardens, and artificial canals.
The Royal Palace of Aranjuez,
built from the 16th century onwards and expanded during the reigns of Philip II and Ferdinand VI, is a splendid example of Baroque and Neoclassical court architecture. Inside, you’ll find the Chinese Room , the Porcelain Room , and the Hall of Mirrors , all richly decorated. The palace is surrounded by extensive historic gardens.
Prince’s Garden
, spanning over 150 hectares, is one of the largest historic gardens in Europe . Its ornamental fountains , swan ponds , tree-lined walkways , and classical sculptures create a beautiful setting, ideal for a leisurely stroll. Designed in the style of English landscape gardens, it also includes the Royal Barge Museum , featuring boats used by royalty.
The Casa de la Comedia
, inaugurated in 1769, is one of the oldest theaters in Spain still standing. It reflects the importance of Aranjuez as a center of leisure and culture for the court , hosting theatrical performances, musicals, and other events for centuries.
Chinchón
Located in the southeast of the Community of Madrid, Chinchón is a town with a strong personality and rural beauty. Its main square , its festivals, and its authenticity have made it a favorite destination for getaways from the capital. Declared a Historic-Artistic Site , it preserves the atmosphere of a 17th-century Castilian village.
Chinchón’s Plaza Mayor:
This irregular, enclosed, and arcaded square is one of the best-preserved examples of a medieval Castilian plaza . Its wooden balconies , belonging to houses built between the 15th and 18th centuries, have been used as viewing platforms for celebrations, open-air theater performances, and bullfights. Today, it continues to be a hub for cultural and gastronomic events.
Church of Our Lady of the Assumption
Located on a promontory overlooking the square, this church was built between the 16th and 17th centuries, and its main altar houses a painting by Goya , “The Assumption of the Virgin”, made by the painter in 1812, when his brother was chaplain of the temple.
Castle of the Counts
Although currently in ruins, the Castle of the Counts is a symbol of the town’s aristocratic past. Built in the 15th century and rebuilt in the 16th, it offers panoramic views of the valley and the town of Chinchón , ideal for ending your visit with an unforgettable image of the surroundings.
