Labyrinth of the Arab Caves in Brihuega
We begin our adventure by venturing into the underground of Brihuega , where a labyrinth of over 8 kilometers of Arab tunnels, hand-carved between the 10th and 11th centuries, stretches out. These galleries served as refuges during times of war and as storage spaces for wine and oil, thanks to their constant temperature of 12ºC. Exploring their original passageways and arches, still standing, you will discover how these caves were vital to the town’s survival throughout different historical periods.
Free time for lunch in Brihuega
After the tour, you’ll have free time for lunch. We’ll recommend some of the best restaurants in the area to sample the local cuisine (lunch not included).
Tour of Brihuega
After lunch, we’ll take a short but comprehensive tour of the picturesque town of Brihuega, known as the “capital of the Alcarria region.” In just 30 minutes, we’ll discover its main attractions, such as the Plaza del Coso, the town’s historical and social heart, and several churches of great artistic value, including Santa María de la Peña, San Felipe, San Simón, and San Miguel, where Romanesque, Gothic, and Mudéjar styles converge, bearing witness to its rich architectural heritage.
Lavender fields (in season)
During the flowering season, we’ll include a stop at the stunning lavender fields surrounding Brihuega. This sea of violet offers a unique landscape, ideal for enjoying the natural surroundings and taking unforgettable photographs.
Route of the Medieval Castles: Jadraque and Torija
We will continue our route with an exterior visit to the Castle of El Cid in Jadraque, a 15th-century fortress built on a strategic hill overlooking the Henares Valley. Next, we will head to the Castle of Torija, declared a Site of Cultural Interest. This 15th-century castle has been restored and now houses the Tourist Information Center for the province of Guadalajara.
Visit to Civic
To end the day, we’ll stop in Cívica, a village practically carved into the rock beside the Tajuña River. This unique enclave, with its caves, springs, and semi-troglodytic dwellings, seems straight out of a fairy tale. Strolling through this little-known place is to discover a magical and almost secret corner of the region.
After a fascinating day among tunnels, fortresses and natural landscapes, we will begin our return to Madrid, arriving in the late afternoon with the feeling of having traveled back in time.
